In Highgate

Steven Minchin's most recent poem to appear here was Bright Capital (November 2011).

In Highgate
By Steven Minchin

ashes keep falling down
scattering in the air
some burning
like the way I treat you
burning tiny scars
fire keeps burning at river's sunken edge
under the sky
unseen
felt
acknowledged and confused
embers taint the space above the dirt
you're so accustomed to
some glowing hot
like your volunteering to go unclean
next to me
because of me
in this place we've never seen
sending ashes
to scatter in
the air unkind
or explained
unjust and burning
