James H Duncan's most recent poem to appear here was Final Fireflies (November 2011).

Silver Owls

silver owl earrings dangle and dance
as she speaks, each spinning on
opposite sides of such an elegant
ivory ballroom, dark velvet curtains
tied back, the reflections of the night
glimmering through window eyes,
the music in her words pouring through
lips so close, and I'd like to tell her so,
but sitting back and watching where
this dance may go, watching these two
silver owls with all the songs in the world
to dance to, it makes me wonder why
I have the urge to speak at all,
when a simple waltz of spinning silver
owls dancing along her skin are everything
I'd ever wish to say
