Before dawn

Lou Pugliese's most recent poem to appear here was You Don't Know Me, published as part of Contributor Series 9: If Men Had Ears in July 2011.

Before dawn
By Lou Pugliese

Awake before the roosters
I'm immersed in what the sleeping world can't imagine
It's a special aura in the dark before dawn
Rain clouds I can't see mask the stars
The air heavy, like a down duvet, lies on my shoulders
The smell of the fresh mown grass
Green, spiky, like a waxed crew cut
All is wet with the morning spritz
Cows moving silently through the low fog
Like sentinel submarines
The sounds are light but clear
Crickets, frogs, the unseen things that push through the brush
The smoke of my morning cigar
Hangs like prayer flags in an unseen breeze
Time passes, alone, content, complete for a moment
Before the day
