untitled 1
By Daniel Dowe

My mom sprinkled sugar
On everything she could
Spaghetti, baby food, even meatloaf
She excelled in making life exuberant
She always opted for a glee
Warm fudge on a cold afternoon
Red paint on lips, a room, or a pail
Sugar was her favorite spice
A little sweetness to soften the tang
I miss that sugar, those warm smiles,
That sent the honey
All the way to my toes
She sprinkled all of our lives;
We were her grateful and lucky little cakes.
