Hat

Stan Galloway's most recent poem here was First Fruit, published as part of Contributor Series 8: Feast and Famine. By now you know Stan's range. Here is a fine example of his humorous poetry. Would you know Dorothy Parker by her hat?

Hat
By Stan Galloway

You dressed as Dorothy Parker for the party,
some dead woman I have never heard of,
as if anyone would know her by her dress.
You say the hat's what makes it obvious.
Now Crocodile Dundee has a hat
that's known the world around—
or maybe Indiana Jones' fedora
snags some recognition,
but Dorothy Parker's hat, I fear,
is only what you call it—
no one else will know or care—
they'll humor you perhaps,
pretend they know,
but really as a costume
you have chosen something too obscure.
But when I say you must get out more,
smiling, you touch my chest and dent the S for Superman
and tell me, "Au contraire,
it's you who needs to read more."
