Silence

Christopher Roe has been painting for more than 40 years and writing poetry for 3 years. His paintings cover most genres, but he has spent the past 12 years capturing the beauty and wonder of Ireland in his art. After a 44-year career in advertising as an art director/graphic designer he retired from that work and now teaches, writes poetry, and pursues his art full time. Silence

A million crickets mime
their sonic music
to the heart's bass beat.

In the absolute deprivation
of soundless silence
a river rushes loud
through deaf ears
not as sound, but pulse.

A river of blood
sluicing quietly
through the veins
of a life trapped
in the silence.

Shallow breathing
like gentle waves
softly breaking
on a deserted beach
are the sobs of pain
that echo unheard
off the cotton walls
of memory.

In the utter emptiness 
of a lonely heart
no one can hear
you scream
above the noise
of the silence.
