Release Me
By Amanda England

Sing me that song again,
the one that freezes time
as I breathlessly watch your fingers
caress nickel-plated strings—
avoiding your face, your eyes,
as the chords immobilize me.
You summon images, paint them
with stroking fingers against the wires
held taut over the honey-colored body of your instrument.
Your voice, warm and thick,
is the canvas on which you paint;
your search for release
calls to my soul, and I'm homesick
for a home I've never had
and am terrified I'll never find,
release me,
release me,
release me ...
