Piece of Cake

Despite the cliché there is nothing easy
about them. How could there be
in anything that requires such beating?
But where else does sweetness arise
from violence? Whisk water into cocoa,
cream butter and sugar, beat in eggs.
Still, who could resist the romance
of red velvet, German chocolate,
Lady Baltimore, or the simpler carrot
and spice, dichotomous angel or devil,
even pineapple that turns
everything upside down.
Undoubtedly they serve a purpose,
commemorating weddings and birthdays,
feeding peasants, hiding every kind
of surprise, though none worse than what
they do to you. Even in Wonderland we learned
eating cakes will make you larger.

Such a sad state of affairs. Even if beaten, cake is oh so good on your lips. but not on your hips. Delicious poem.
