Revelations

Jeanette Gallagher's most recent poem to appear here was In the Name of All That Is Holy, published as part of Contributor Series 6: A Currency of Words. Here we get to see some of Jeanette's sharp humor.

Revelations
By Jeanette Gallagher

It slipped into my bedroom
while I slept
and into my closet
where it altered
the anatomy of my apparel

restructured my beloved
bejeweled shoes
with moderate heels
into stilettos

crushed my head turning
hats of fur, felt, and straw
embellished with feathers,
silk scarves, and lace.

Then it went into my bathroom
to use its sorcery
to distort the full-length mirror
of any semblance of reality reflection.

It replaced my perfumes and lotions
with arthritis potions and pills
for the digestive tract
too embarrassing to mention.

It invaded my dreams
and pervaded my essence
of my youth with pestilence,
brimstone, and shrinking bone

and just before I woke
I heard its subtle
voice reveal
these are the golden years.
