Contributor Series 7: The Confessional Diary of Bone
Cradle of Civilization
By Jean Hutchinson

Her ebony silhouette
glowed and shimmered
in morning light.

She stroked her jet hair
until it floated like wool
around her sculpted head.

She glided through life,
her lips, carmine clay,
her nose, a noble pyramid.

She stood astride two worlds,
and, loving both, left mine
to follow her heart.

Today her precious bones
lie buried deep in Africa,
continent of her dreams.

And, oh how I rejoice for her!
And, oh! how I mourn her.

Amen.
