Sin of Omission
By Kim Klugh
What needs to be said
is that I regret
my silence
that I did not speak up
that I did not say stop
breathe
take a step back
that my courage froze full in my throat
so in the end I was just like the rest
waiting for someone else to
make a move
to make it cease
to halt the crossfire
to utter, enough
what needs to be said
in the aftermath
is that I am sorry
you ended up a casualty
but for one word
I could have voiced
Remnants (February 2010), published as part of Contributor Series 4: Aspects of the Elephant, was Kim Klugh's most recent poem to appear at vox poetica.

Oh, Kim! Your poem set me to musing about how many times I wish I'd said, "I'm sorry." or defended someone by telling another, "Don't do that to her," or by explaining, "What I meant to say, was..."
Perhaps, your poem will help me remember. Reply to this
