Dark Day

William C Ross last gave us Summer Rains. As proven by his poems inspired by the word of the day, the man has a way with words. This poem, so different from the others of his you've read here, shows his range.

Dark Day
By William C Ross

Portentous black clouds hung overhead
as dusk began gathering at dawn,
and the day unfolded slowly—
its hours measured by the chiming clock,
a blind musician
who always knew what number came next,
but did not care if the same number
played in daylight or darkness;
and the day without sunshine
flowed like a bottomless river
toward a night without moon or stars,
and on the black horizon
was only the hope of tomorrow,
and that was just enough to get us through
this dark, dark day.
