My Future

John Sherer's poem A Breeze on Farmers's Curfew appeared here in July. John asks existential questions that resonate with us regardless of our age.

My Future
By John Sherer

What's more money going to do
When I've got enough for my food?

What's a school gonna teach
When I can read a book?

Why must I run to
And away from where I was?

Why was I ever born
If they knew I were to leave?

What's separate from me
Besides everything else?

As if existence must be lonely
When we are guaranteed just self.

But I say no to this,
I believe in community.

Although I dread the path I walk,
For it's led others away from me.
