Betsy the Barn Cow: A Suffragette's Lament
By KJ Hannah Greenberg

Here I quieten sad and blue,
I, a cow, who just can't moo.
Cud I form. Tail I shake,
But bovine noise, I barely make.

My milk's supreme; the cream's rich, yellow.
I'd swap that stuff for one full bellow,
Solely one note, simply one sound,
Only one teensy, ear-shattering round.

I'm tired of tether, I abhor cold machines,
It's time to earn rights by some other means.
My children are hungry, plus I've no ungulate fun.
Stupid bulls claim the pastures, the pear tree, the sun.

Maybe a stampede, perhaps a long strike,
Better yet, I could low far into the night.
If only my voice would boom this one time
I'd reclaim the farmyard, restore all that's mine.

KJ Hannah Greenberg's poetry appeared at vox poetica in 2009 and 2010. Her most recent poem, Baby's Friends, appeared in April 2010.
