Ode to Everyday Heroes
By Mark Gooch
Snow falling fast, the wind starts to howl,
Driveway is full, cars are snowed in.
What is that sound?
After the task, the driveway is clear.
Flames eat the wood, billows of smoke reach the sky,
A swish! And then the flames just go out.
The guy in pajamas goes back in his house.
The phone starts to ring, Central Dispatch Request:
A car has flipped over, prepare for the worst.
He arrives on the scene; she's a bit dazed,
He picks up her stuff, arranges a tow.
Leak in the roof, repairs are needed,
Furnace is broken, the pump has no prime.
There's a knock on the door, someone appears
Armed with tools and willing to share.
Soon everything is fixed, he smiles and disappears.
When the time comes to pass
And the end has drawn near,
Then and only then
My true identity will be clear.
Written on the headstone, for everyone to read:
Here lies a friend, neighbor, and Good Samaritan
Who dedicated his life for the sake of his peers.
Good poem, Mark. And good things to be:
friend, neighbor, and Good Samaritan.
