What the Moon Knows

Salvatore Buttaci has made us think before (Passing Time). His collection of short stories, Flashing My Shortshas just been released. This poem expresses the human drive to know, universal and timeless. Nature and night seem to be the natural elements for the quest.

What the Moon Knows
By Salvatore Buttaci

wolves howl
from wooded sanctuaries
in the winters of night

if only we could translate
their lupine bayings
at the moon

if only we could learn
what the moon already knows
and hides from us

if we should tremble
behind locked doors
or ride the howling into sleep
