Schooled

Mark Myers lives and writes in North Carolina. When he's not writing he works as a land surveyor. His work was recently published at Ink Sweat and Tears and he maintains a blog where you can read more of his work. Mark's poem here is a literary reminder that things aren't always what they seem.

Schooled
By Mark Myers

Two boys 12 years of age meet at the store
It's been a while, they hug, some new way
What is the bond?
One is obese and pale face white
the other too short and dark-skinned
redneck? gangsta?
Better than your preconceives
They rise above
This part they have been cast in
A permanent tragedy of dope and fires and lies
Where all the props are papier-mache
And the curtain comes down in crushes
They cross your lines and spit in your eye
With their funny little hug
They show you the fool
