Move On

Jasper Ballard's poem Childhood Lost appeared here in January and was picked up by Lisa Marie Basile for inclusion in her anthology VWA: Poems for Haiti, now on sale, proceeds to be donated to charities benefiting those suffering in the aftermath of the earthquake. This is a different poem today, one about lost love. This is a popular poetic theme, a near-universal experience. The cadence of this poem suggests anger, sadness, and longing, all the component emotions that go with the territory.

Move On
By Jasper Ballard

OK, let's try again.
Try again to move on.
Seemingly impossible
but it's all I've got left.
Move on.
Simple words, simple idea.
Impossible task.
Easy for you to say.
Did you ever meet her?
Speak with her?
Hear her laugh?
I thought not.
Then who are you to tell me to
move on.
I can't turn back time.
I can't make it right.
I can't get back all she offered
and I foolishly declined.
I lost true love.
Ah yes, I hear it
again ... move on.
