He Said You Looked Good in Red

Jeanette Cheezum is a charter member of the Hampton Roads Writers (you know what that means, right? She's another Virginian!) and a veteran member of many online writing sites and e-zines. Jeanette was a semifinalist in the Mixed Drinks contest and Verb's Dynamic Dialogue contest. Her work has been published in numerous journals and anthologies, and 2 of the books she has appeared in have been on the New York Times bestseller list. Her work has also been featured at Paul D Brazil's Friday Flash, Pen Ten, and Blink Ink. I could go on, but I'd rather you read her poem. This poem arcs from questioning despair to philosophic understanding. Note the changing use of person and how it shifts your perspective as the reader. Read it once, twice, three times. Hell, you've got nothing that needs to get done today—read it til you're inspired to write your own poem. And then read it again.

He Said You Looked Good in Red
By Jeanette Cheezum

Nights are torture, dreams are
unfulfilled. Why had he left her?
He said she looked good in red ...

Now all she had was muffled voices
and distant memories. Desires to
celebrate the contagious journey
of happiness.

Love opens the passage
to our souls, don't compromise,
sadness cannot appreciate laughter.

Engage, embrace, hearts are
delicate. Promises were meant
to unfold, love stories are
better lived than told.

Remember he said, you looked
good in red.
