The Coming Dawn

Manny Beltran is a visual artist and writer who lives and works in New Jersey. His paintings are works of textured beauty, drawing on the colors of the landscape and the depths of feeling. In a classic artistic moment of high drama, he recently destroyed a collection of his poems, leaving us with this beautiful but heartbroken poem. Note the lack of punctuation, which lends the poem a feeling of rushed emotion, akin to crying. Manny is currently working on illustrations for a children's book.

The Coming Dawn
By Manny Beltran

The world has grown too cold
With a broken heart it remembers
Days far too short
And dreams now tainted
I pray to forget all I remember
And just pray to go home
In the damp night I think of you
The way I fooled myself with love
And let the truths all be hushed
To be buried within a simple lie
And let your kiss be my life
The salty taste of true deceit
If I was strong enough to believe
I would have trusted my heart
And let this all die before it began
But with the coming dawn so near
I now see I am not what I was
But am a shadow in a world of light
